Platinum Price FAQ
What is the price of platinum today?
The live price is at the top of this page, quoted per troy ounce, and the table shows it per gram, kilo, and other units.
What does “spot price” mean?
It is the current market price of one troy ounce for immediate delivery.
Why do dealers charge more than spot?
Coins and bars carry a premium for minting, distribution, and dealer margin.
Why is platinum cheaper than gold if it is rarer?
Most gold is held as a store of value, while platinum is driven mainly by industrial and car demand, which has been weaker.
What is platinum used for?
Mainly catalytic converters, jewelry, chemical and petroleum refining, medical devices, and fuel cells.
What purity is platinum jewelry?
Usually 95% (stamped 950). Bullion is 99.95% or 99.9%.
Where does platinum come from?
About seven-tenths of mined platinum comes from South Africa, with Russia the second-largest producer.
Is platinum a good investment?
Its price swings more than gold’s because the market is smaller and tied to industry. This is information, not advice.
How the Platinum Spot Price Works
The spot price is the market price for one troy ounce of platinum for immediate delivery, quoted in US dollars. It is set by trading in futures and over-the-counter markets and by the London and New York dealing desks, and it moves almost around the clock. Spot metals trade from Sunday 6 PM to Friday 5 PM Eastern Time.
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the everyday ounce. Platinum is a thinner market than gold, so a single large order can move the price more. Coins and bars sell at a premium over spot to cover minting, distribution, and dealer margin.
Spot vs. futures: spot is for delivery now. Futures are for delivery on a later date and normally trade slightly above spot because of storage, insurance and interest costs.

What Moves the Platinum Price
- Autocatalyst demand. The largest single use of platinum is in catalytic converters, especially for diesel vehicles. Car sales and emissions rules drive this demand.
- Jewelry demand. Platinum is popular for engagement rings and fine jewelry, with China, Japan, India and Europe the main buyers.
- Industrial demand. Chemical, petroleum, glass, medical and electronics industries use platinum as a catalyst or for its resistance to corrosion.
- Hydrogen and clean energy. Platinum is a key material in fuel cells and in electrolysers that make hydrogen, so the growth of hydrogen technology is a long-term source of demand.
- Mine supply. Platinum is far rarer than gold. South Africa produces roughly seven-tenths of the world’s mined supply, with Russia second, so strikes, power shortages and political risk in these regions can move the price. Recycling from old catalytic converters adds supply.
- Investment demand. ETF holdings, coins and bars add or remove demand. Interest rates and the U.S. dollar affect investment appetite as they do for other metals.
Platinum vs. Gold
Platinum is rarer than gold, yet most of the time since 2015 it has sold for less. Before that it usually traded above gold. The gap reflects the different demand: gold is held mostly as a store of value, while platinum depends heavily on industry and car production. Investors watch the platinum-to-gold price relationship as a guide to whether platinum is cheap or expensive.
Platinum Value by Purity
Purity is stated as fineness, the parts of pure platinum per 1,000.
| Fineness | Platinum content | Typically found in |
|---|---|---|
| 999 | 99.9% | Bars and rounds |
| 950 | 95% | The most common platinum jewelry standard (stamped 950, Plat or Pt950) |
| 900 | 90% | Jewelry, mainly Europe and Asia |
| 850 | 85% | Some European jewelry |
A ring stamped 950 is 95% platinum, so its melt value is about 95% of its weight at the spot price. Melt value is not what a buyer will pay or charge. Scrap buyers pay below melt, and finished jewelry sells above it.
Platinum Price History
Platinum reached a record near $2,300 an ounce in March 2008, just before the financial crisis, and then fell below $800 in the following months. It spent much of the 2010s and early 2020s under $1,100 as diesel car sales dropped, before recovering in the mid-2020s. Check the current high against your data source, since providers differ.
About Platinum
Platinum is a dense, silvery-white metal that does not tarnish or corrode. Its name comes from the Spanish platina, “little silver”. It is hypoallergenic, which makes it a favorite for jewelry, and it is about 30 times rarer than gold in the earth’s crust. Platinum bullion coins include the American Platinum Eagle and the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, both 99.95% pure.
