Frequently Asked Questions
What can I track on this live prices page?
You can follow the live prices of gold, silver, platinum and palladium. For each metal the page shows the current bid and ask price, how much it has changed since the previous close, the day’s low and high, and a 24-hour mini chart. A performance table shows how each metal has moved over periods from three days to fifteen years.
What do bid and ask mean?
The bid is the price buyers in the spot market are currently offering, and the ask is the price sellers are currently asking. The ask is always slightly higher than the bid, and the gap between them is called the spread. The large price on each card is the bid.
Where do these prices come from?
They come from the live spot-market feed for precious metals and are shown in US dollars. They update every few seconds while the market is open. They are indicative prices for information only and are not a trading quote.
What is the spot price?
The spot price is the market price for one troy ounce of a metal for immediate delivery. Physical coins and bars usually sell for more than spot because of minting, distribution and dealer costs.
When is the market open?
Spot precious metals trade almost around the clock, from Sunday 6 PM to Friday 5 PM Eastern Time. The status badge at the top of the Precious Metals section shows whether the market is open or closed. When it is closed, the page shows the last prices recorded before the close.
How is the daily change worked out?
The change shown is measured against the previous 5 PM New York close. The green or red badge shows the same change as a percentage.
Can I see prices per gram or kilo instead of per ounce?
Yes. Use the unit menu in the Precious Metals header to switch between ounce, gram, 10 grams, kilo, pennyweight, tola and tael. The Historical Performance card and the calculator have their own unit menus.
How do I calculate the value of a quantity of metal?
Use the Value Calculator. Enter a quantity, choose a unit, and the table shows what that amount is worth in US dollars for gold, silver, platinum and palladium at the current bid price. This is an estimate of metal value only, and retail premiums and fees may apply to physical products.
Why are some performance figures missing?
The Historical Performance table needs enough recorded price history for each period. Longer periods such as one year or more appear once that history is available.
Where can I see a full chart for each metal?
Each metal card has a button to its dedicated price chart page, with interactive charts, per-unit price tables and more detail for gold, silver, platinum and palladium.
Are these prices the same as the prices I pay in the shop?
No. The prices on this page are spot-market prices. Products in the shop are priced with a premium over spot that depends on the item, its size and availability.
