History & Background

The Indian Head Eagle was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens as part of the redesign of United States gold coins ordered by President Theodore Roosevelt. It replaced the Liberty Head eagle in 1907.

The first coins had no motto. In 1908, after public discussion, IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse. The series continued to 1933, with gaps in some years, and the 1933 date is a key coin because most of the mintage was melted.

The Indian Head Eagle was struck at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.

Collecting Tips

  • Many common dates are priced close to their gold value.
  • Check for edge damage and cleaning, which reduce value.
  • Learn the difference between the 1907 no-motto coins and the later coins with the motto.
